VR in Training
February 5, 2025

Virtual Reality (VR) uses virtual worlds to help immerse learners in the content. VR adds a new level to training without needing to do it hands on and in-person. It is an immersive way to train that simulates real life scenarios without any real-world risks or costs.

A major benefit of VR is the safety it assures the user. Unlike in-person training, VR has no safety risks, the trainee can learn in the safety of their own home or office. The content can even be built in a world where trainees practice communicating and problem solving with other trainees, all without the fear of real-world consequences (Yang, 2010). VR is also more efficient than traditional training because the user can complete content at any time. Additionally, the user does not need a trainer to be present. This also leads to a more relaxed learning environment, which can make it easier to focus and absorb information. Virtual simulations can reduce costs for training scenarios that would otherwise be expensive to recreate (Xie et al., 2021). VR creates a virtual environment that makes learning easier, safer, and more cost-effective, but it is not without its flaws.

While VR can decrease long-term costs by lowering the need for full-time trainers and eliminate expensive training scenarios, it does have initial set up costs. The hardware and software need to be purchased, and the content needs to be developed for that format. Additionally, some trainers will still be necessary to answer questions or work through more complex issues. However, they will only need to be there for short periods of time while the training is occurring, allowing them to focus on other aspects of their job (Xie et al., 2021). VR also has a learning curve for companies implementing it for the first time, but after it is proven to be effective, it can run smoothly without much intervention.

Overall, VR is transforming training by changing the way employers can implement their content. It gives them new avenues of learning that are more cost-effective and safer. While there are costs associated with developing and using a VR program, the benefits outweigh the costs. The money saved through training virtually, as well as the increased effectiveness of the training, makes it a valid option for many companies. Look into VR to update or expand your current training!
