Competency is Cool

Competency-Based Learning (CBL) focuses on mastering a specific skill before moving on, rather than focusing on getting through content quickly or spending a certain amount of time on it (Kayyali, 2023). This could involve relearning information until a test is passed or until a learner can demonstrate a particular skill. Using competency-based learning ensures that trainees fully understand the content before entering the workplace. This creates employees who can quickly apply their internalized knowledge instead of ones who attempt to remember it from their brief time running through a course. Additionally, with competency-based learning, an employer can easily adapt training to current workplace needs.

Competency-based learning can help improve efficiency on the job by increasing the impact of training. Many employers need employees with specific skills, so instead of forcing an employee to learn all the content immediately, they can focus on skills directly relevant to their job (Voorhees, 2002). This gets them working quicker, while still retaining the option of giving them further training later. Additionally, with CBL an employee can complete the training at their own pace, which encourages them to absorb the material rather than rushing through it (Sullivan & McIntosh, 1996). CBL is outcome-oriented, making learners apply skills in real-world scenarios before advancing, which not only strengthens their on-the-job performance but also ensures they know the content before completing their training. Learners also retain knowledge better because CBL encourages active learning and continuous assessment rather than just focusing on completion (Kayyali, 2023).

Implementing Competency-Based Learning:

  • Identify Core Competencies: Determine which skills are important for your employees.
    • These should be the desired outcome of the training modules.
  • Create Possible Learning Paths: For CBL to be personalized, you need to set up possible learning paths that are flexible and self-paced.
    • Preparing these allows employees to progress smoothly as they learn each skill.
  • Provide Continuous Assessment and Feedback: Progression falls short if the employee never receives feedback to ensure proficiency.
    • Feedback can also determine areas where employees might need more support.
  •

  • Immediate Skill Application:
Because the training is based on competency in individual skills, an employee should start applying the skills immediately.

    • This leads to better retention and skill mastery.
  • Promote Continuous Learning: The skills necessary for a job are constantly shifting. Have your training reflect this by creating new training for new competencies.
    • This helps close skill gaps and keep employees up to date.
